Luxury in the Loire Valley with Tourico Vacations –
France has several cities worthy of a tour, most notably Paris – the City of Lights. It’s perhaps most famous for the Eiffel Tower and the sheer number of kisses stolen beneath its iron bars.
But thinking only of Paris when you think of France would be to do yourself an injustice. There are so many destinations throughout this beautiful country deserving of a tour. If you enjoy wide-open, rolling hills and lush, green vineyards, the growing wine movement in the Loire Valley might be worth your next vacation.
The Loire Valley is alive with vivacious tourists for most of the year, but as summer fades into fall, the crowds begin to wane and the harvest peaks. The vineyards begin to blush in beautiful crimsons and golds. In the early part of September, the local winemakers get together to lead several vineyard tours, complete with wine tastings and gourmet food pairings.
Now, it wasn’t always this way in the valley. Traditionalists have frowned on the region’s turning from quiet and calm into a winemaking, tourist destination – however, these rebel vineyards have created something special. This region’s soils and year-round temps , as well as the winemakers’ unconventional methods, bring out natural expressions and variations. For instance, vineyard Domaine de l’Ecu makes their wines within clay amphoras. This is a tradition that dates back more than 8,000 years, but it’s been revived only just recently by this and other wineries. Another vineyard, La Coulee de Serrant, offers great wines, but its views and its history are unbeatable. Its white wine made from locally sourced chenin blanc is a biodynamic palate pleasing beverage, but if you lean more towards the reds, Domaine de Montcy specializes in natural red wines, such as their sauvignon-chardonnay blend.
Getting to the Loire Valley is a journey in itself. It can be completed by car in just under four hours from the Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris, but it’s a trip that is best enjoyed over the course of a few days. If you’d rather see the countryside via train, you can catch one from the airport to Angers and on to Tours, and from there on to Nantes. The Valley stretches from Nantes through Sancerre.
